The vineyard benefits from a moderate altitude which, combined with the influence of cool air currents from the nearby Alps, helps to preserve great fruit purity and avoid any heaviness, even in sunny vintages. The Calvarino vineyard rests on soil composed of black volcanic basalt. This specific terroir is responsible for the wine's aromatic signature: Smoky minerality: It brings characteristic notes of gunflint and flint. Tension and Freshness: Unlike limestone soils which give opulence, basalt promotes a lively acidity and a "vertical" structure in the mouth. It is a terroir of precision. Where the limestone of La Rocca brings richness and exotic notes, the black basalt of Calvarino offers a straight, saline and extremely pure wine, often compared to the greatest Rieslings for its ability to transcribe the minerality of the soil.

Owner and history

The Pieropan family, owners of the domaine, is deeply attached to its land and traditions. It is a purely family and historical management. After the death of the visionary Leonildo "Nino" Pieropan in 2018 (the man who proved that Soave could be a very great wine for aging), his sons Andrea (agronomist) and Dario (oenologist) took up the torch alongside their mother, Teresita.

Vinification and aging

The name "Calvarino" (little Calvary) refers to the difficulty of working this steep vineyard. Unlike La Rocca (limestone), the soil here is composed of black volcanic basalt, which gives the wine a completely different character.

Winemaking: Purity above all
Grape varieties: A blend of 70% Garganega (for structure) and 30% Trebbiano di Soave (for aroma and acidity).

Aging: Unlike La Rocca, Calvarino is never aged in oak. It spends approximately 12 months in vitrified cement vats. This choice preserves the vibrancy of the fruit and the mineral character of the volcanic soil without any oak influence.

Refining: It remains on its fine lees to gain fat without losing its tension.

The team's opinion

If La Rocca represents the sun-drenched and opulent side of Pieropan, Calvarino is its pure, crystalline, and profoundly mineral counterpart. The 2021 vintage is particularly successful for this cuvée, having benefited from a balanced growing season, resulting in remarkable aromatic precision. It is often the preferred wine of lovers of great Rieslings or Chablis for its tension and straightness.
