Tasting notes

Brilliant ruby in colour. The nose seduces with immediate aromatic purity — ripe fruits mingling with hints of liquorice and spice, gently marked by the signature of Carménère. The palate balances sweet and savoury notes, with a lively freshness and a sleek, lasting finish.

Owner and history

The ‘Jardins d’essai’ of Château Ausone

Owned by the Vauthier family since 1971, Château de Fonbel is a place of innovation and experimentation, a diverse mosaic of sixteen hectares divided into small garden vineyards of sandy, clay and gravel soils. The diversity extends to the grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère, a rare variety that almost disappeared from Bordeaux. The result is a singular Saint-Émilion, savoury rather than sweet, linear rather than broad, with uncommon spice and camphor notes. Direct, immediate, pure, with a subtle touch of oak influence.

2025 VINTAGE.

Warm, clement conditions allowed for a markedly earlier harvest than in previous years. The Carménère, picked in mid September rather than early October, already reveals a promising cuve—full of finesse and freshness—announcing the immediacy and drinkability that define Fonbel. All varieties navigated the late June and mid-August heatwaves without stress, translating into a naturally balanced wine.
