The history of Château Cantenac Brown

          The union of two cultures

It was in 1754 that an Irish merchant settled in Cantenac. As the family faced debt, the vineyard was divided and sold. This is how John Lewis-Brown, a Scotsman and animal painter, acquired the Margaux vineyards. He had a wine cellar built there.Tudor-inspired castleto pay homage to its origins. In 1843, the banker Gomard acquired the estate and sold it 40 years later to Louis-Armand Lalande. Lalande worked to develop the vineyard and market its wines, which gained in renown. His efforts paid off, as between two acquisitions, theChâteau Cantenac Brownis ranked among the3rd Classified GrowthsAt the end of the 20th century, insurance companies took turns owning the Château.

THE SUBLIMATION OF THE MEDOC TERROIR

The vineyard covers 63 hectares of the Cantenac terroir. It is located within the appellationMargauxIt is in the heart of the Médoc that we find the three king grape varieties of Bordeaux. Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Cabernet Franc (30%), and Merlot (5%) are located on the best part of the appellation: the plateau. The vines are planted on agravelly soilWinegrowers often say thatthis land is both rich and poorPoor at first, in that it forces the vine to root deeply in order to draw the water it needs. Rich afterward, because the gravelly soil allows it to store the day's heat and release it at night. As a result, the grapes concentrate their flavors and offer a tasting experience that truly reflects the terroir.
