the origin of wine

Located on a hill, the vineyard extends over approximately one hundred hectares on the edge of the village of Margaux in the appellationMargauxIt rests on a soil of very dense Günzian gravel and limestone subsoil in the lower part. The grape varieties are Merlot (20%), Cabernet Sauvignon (75%), Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc for the white wines. The soils are worked using traditional methods.

Organic treatments have completely replaced chemical treatments since 1980 and the animal kingdom is scrupulously observed so that the plant finds its own balance and defenses.

The story ofChâteau MargauxIts history dates back to 1815, when the Marquis de la Colonilla had this magnificent castle with its Greek columns and peristyle built. In 1977,André Mentzelopoulos, then owner of the Félix Potin stores, acquired the estate. His impact was spectacular, whether in the vineyard, the cellars, or at the château. He notably implemented drainage, replanted vines, and introduced aging in new oak barrels. He built the first large underground cellar in the region, a remarkable technical feat. Under the supervision of the renowned oenologist Émile Peynaud, he reintroduced theRed PavilionofChâteau Margauxby significantly increasing the selection, and redefines theWhite Pavilion.

Upon his death, his daughter,Corinne MentzelopoulosThe estate continues its meticulous work, assisted by Paul Pontalier and more recently by Philippe Bascaules. Their working philosophy is based on scientific methods designed to refine and validate even the most traditional practices. Thus, they analyze each process and measure every action. Biodynamic agriculture, for example, is being tested for a minimum of 10 years to certify its potential contribution to quality. Everything is carefully studied before the Château Margaux appellation is applied.

The wines are characterized by their finesse, elegance, complexity, freshness, power, density, length, and above all, a particularly soft and velvety tannin structure. The wines are best enjoyed young, but cellaring them for several decades will optimally reveal the finesse and complexity of their aromas.

The white wine ofChâteau Margauxis calledWhite PavilionThis is probably the best white wine on the Left Bank. The second red wine is calledRed Pavilionand is subject to drastic assembly.
