The history of the Château de Saint Cosme

Following in the footsteps of Gallo-Roman viticulture

THESaint Cosme Castleis located at the heart of the appellationGigondasThe estate is located near an ancient Roman villa, where viticulture is believed to have begun thousands of years ago. In the heart of the cradle of winemaking and very close to the Dentelles de Montmirail, the familyBarruolHe bought his first vines in 1490. Since then, the estate has been passed down within the same family since the 15th century. Henri Barruol established Saint Cosme as a renowned producer as early as 1957. He was one of the first to convert his estate to organic farming.Biologicalin 1972, when he was still selling his wine in barrels. His son, Louis Barruol, took over and has been running the business since 1992. He inherited a healthy vineyard, allowing him to create different vintages ofGigondasof incredible finesse.

                  The Terroir of Saint Cosme

The vineyards extend across 3 different terroirs:

                  • The Positionborders the Chapel of Saint Cosme and consists ofGrenacheandClairetteThis terroir of Jurassic limestone marls and fossils gives the wines a great minerality and incredible elegance.
                  • Le ClauxIt is a 1.8-hectare plot of very old vines vinified in the Burgundian style. The wines from this plot are incredibly aromatic and refined.
                  • Hominis Fidesis also part of the estate's old vines. The sandy soils give incredible power and finesse to theGrenache.
