The History of the Castle

Four big names in wine

The story ofChâteau Troplong Mondotbegins in the 18th century. It was in 1745 that the abbotRaymond de SèzeHe had the château we know today built on the site known as Mondot. He planted the first vines that would become the focus of attention in the 21st century. His successor would take up the mantle while also defending Louis XVI during his trial.

In the 19th century, just before the classification of Bordeaux wines, the Château was bought by theTroplong familyIn addition to lending their name to the château, the new owners participated in the expansion of the vineyard. Its reputation was also enhanced. Raymond Troplong, President of the Senate, chose his vineyard. His nephew, Edouard, carried on the tradition until finally selling the property to theValette familyFour generations will pass on the jewel of the Gironde. Christine Valette-Pariente, in particular, will leave her mark on the history of the Château. Under her direction, it will indeed reach the position ofGrand Cru Classé B of Saint-Emilion.

In 2017, it was the former general manager of Château Cos d'Estournel,Aymeric De Girondewho buys the property. He and his team bring toChâteau Troplong Mondota new lease of life that can be seen from the 2017 vintage.

The pursuit of excellence

THEChâteau Troplong-Mondotrises on theappellation of Saint-EmilionIn the heart of the Gironde region, near the estuary and benefiting from an oceanic climate, the vineyard covers 28 of the property's 33 hectares. On the plateau, situated at an altitude of 100 meters, the region's flagship grape varieties enjoy excellent sun exposure.

The Merlot (90%), Cabernet Franc (5%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%) grapes are cultivated using sustainable viticulture practices. The vineyard is maintained using traditional methods. Animal traction is therefore used to plow the clay and limestone soils. The Château is driving a transition towards aorganic farmingby limiting inputs in particular.

All this attention paid by the teams ofChâteau Troplong-Mondot, at each stage of vineyard maintenance, has allowed the wine produced on the estate to reach the place ofPremier Grand Cru Classé B of Saint-Emilion.

The revival of Château Troplong Mondot

After hand-harvesting, the red grapes are placed in wooden and stainless steel vats for maceration and fermentation. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for 15 to 18 months. 85% of the barrels are new.

Today,Aymeric de GirondeHe brings with him a new lease of life and new ambitions. He invests in the estate on the eve of the 2017 harvest and makes the decision to completely change the winemaking styles and the teams.
