The revival of Château Haut-Marbuzet
A meteoric rise in quality
THEChâteau Haut-Marbuzetwas founded in 1770, in the heart of the appellationSaint-Estèphe, on the left bank of the Gironde, about 50 kilometers from Bordeaux. Its wine is already highly regarded, thus receiving the title ofCru Bourgeoisin 1932. His true fame, however, would begin in1952, whenHervé DubosqHe acquired ownership of the 7 hectares of vines through a life annuity. A passionate winemaker, he went on to buy land to expand the vineyard, which eventually reached 75 hectares in the commune of Saint-Estèphe. His son, Henri, joined him at the head of the estate in 1962. Their sole ambition was to lead Château Haut-Marbuzet to its highest level. Their objective was achieved in 2003, when the château was promoted from Cru Bourgeois toCru Bourgeois Exceptionneland that the wines are highly sought after by all lovers of fine wines. Henri is now gradually passing the torch to his sons, who maintain the same desire to constantly improve the quality of the wines produced within the family vineyard.
A unique terroir combined with inimitable expertise
The clearly defined choices of Château Haut-Marbuzet
THEChâteau Haut-Marbuzetextends over75 hectaressurroundings and benefits from an ideal terroir for viticulture, typical of the appellationSaint-EstèpheIt overlooks the Gironde estuary from a Günzian gravelly ridge over a clay-limestone subsoil. It also has the unique characteristic of containing blue clay in its soil (on plots planted with old Merlot vines). This gives its wines a unique and inimitable character that makes Château Haut-Marbuzet particularly distinctive. The grape varieties are 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. The vines, averaging 35 years old, are cultivated using sustainable farming practices, with minimal chemical inputs.
The owners of Château Haut-Marbuzet have opted for a very high planting density of 9,000 vines per hectare, resulting in higher quality grapes without increasing yield. Harvesting begins when the grapes are nearly overripe. They are then aged in 100% new oak barrels. All these choices contribute to a wine with a distinctive and voluptuous style, boasting exceptionally smooth tannins. The result is a powerful and spicy wine, flamboyant in style, with exotic aromas.
